Age Requirements and Basic Conditions


Category C – Rigid Truck

  • Minimum age: 18 (with Driver CPC) or 21 (without CPC)
  • You must hold a full Category B licence (including a Polish licence)

Category CE – Truck with Trailer / Articulated Vehicle

  • You must already hold a full Category C licence
  • Minimum age: 18 (with CPC) or 21 (without CPC)

Category D – Bus

  • Full Category B licence required
  • Minimum age: 21 (with CPC) or 24 (without CPC)

Theory Test – The First Step

How to Prepare

You can study using official learning materials, either books or online practice tests. Exams take place at Prometric test centres. An audio version in Polish is available — simply select “Polish” when booking.

💰 Fees

  • Category C or CE – €72
  • Combined C + D test – €84

🕒 Test Format

  • C / CE – 100 questions, 74 correct answers required, 100 minutes
  • C + D – 140 questions, 104 correct answers required, 140 minutes

After passing, you will receive a Theory Test Certificate valid for 2 years.

Medical Examination and Learner Permit

🩺 Medical Report

You must complete a medical examination using the official RSA Medical Report Form. Approximate cost: €60. The report is valid for 3 months.

📋 Applying through NDLS

You will need:
  • Completed D201 form
  • Theory Test Certificate
  • Medical Report
  • Proof of identity (PSC card or passport)
  • €35 application fee

The Learner Permit is valid for 2 years and can be renewed without repeating the theory test. Applications can also be submitted online via a verified MyGovID account.

🚛 Practical Driving Test (C, CE, D)

  • Bookings are made through MyRoadSafety.ie
  • Test fee: €120
  • Once you receive your invitation, arrange your preparation lessons with your instructor so you are fully ready for the test day.

🧑‍ Driver CPC – Professional Qualification

To work legally as a professional truck or bus driver in Ireland, you must obtain the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

📘 Step 1 – Theory Modules

  • Module 2 (Theory) – €72
  • Module 3 (Case Study) – €72
  • Booking is available online or by phone. The exam is conducted in English only and available at over 40 centres nationwide. The Case Study consists of 3 scenarios (45 questions total). You must score at least 28 correct answers, including a minimum of 5 in each scenario.

📗 Step 2 – Practical Modules

  • Driving Test – €120
  • Daily Walk Around Check – €32
  • You must provide a suitable test vehicle. Many instructors offer vehicle hire for the exam (approximately €80).

🔁 Maintaining Your Driver CPC

After successfully completing all modules, you will receive your Driver CPC qualification card.
To keep it valid, you must complete 35 hours of periodic training (5 days × 7 hours) over a 5-year cycle.

💡 Additional Notes

  • It is possible to arrange your licence practical test and CPC practical elements on the same day
  • The main theory test can be taken with Polish audio support
  • Drivers who obtained Category C or D before 9 September 2009 / 2008 may have acquired rights (CPC granted automatically)
